A Focus on the Face

Dr. Johnny Mao's interest in the field of facial plastic and reconstructive surgery was first stimulated by an open approach to nasal septal reconstruction. Through a facial degloving incision underneath the lip, he was immediately in awe by the intricate facial skeleton and open nasal/sinus anatomy. In his residency training in urban Detroit, he encountered many cases of traumatic facial injuries and witnessed the effective healing that can be accomplished only by surgery. The prospect of relieving the misery caused by congenital facial deformities, complex maxillofacial trauma, a crooked or obstructed nose, and disfiguring facial defects caused by head and neck cancer inspires him to pursue advance training in facial plastic and reconstructive surgery.

Specialized Fellowship Training

Dr. Mao was the chosen fellow for the American Academy of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery Fellowship at Premier Image, where he was under the preceptorship of Dr. William Silver and Dr. Louis DeJoseph. Premier Image Cosmetic and Laser Surgery is extremely proud to take part in this highly competitive program, where only 46 fellows are chosen each year from accredited otolaryngology-head and neck surgery residency programs throughout the country.

Research & Resident Teaching

Dr. Mao's participation in basic and clinical research has resulted in several published papers and a national presentation in every year during his residency and fellowship. With an established track record of academic achievement and dedication to research, he remains focused on continuing to contribute to the research literature in the years ahead; especially in the areas of facial plastic and reconstructive surgery. As an attending at Yale New Haven Hospital, he contributes to resident teaching and shares his expertise and clinical pearls on rhinoplasty and facial plastic procedures.

An Individual Approach to Facial Rejuvenation

Dr. Mao practices full-spectrum facial cosmetic and reconstructive surgery. He believes there are unique features on everyone's face that can be balanced or enhanced thus creating a natural look. He is fully experienced in utilizing both surgical and non-surgical approaches such as neuromodulator/BOTOX® and fillers, including the use of powerful lasers, in the rejuvenation of the aging face.

Local Anesthesia

Dr. Mao offers almost all of his treatments under local anesthesia, with an emphasis on patient comfort. The appropriate anesthesia plan and recovery expectations are discussed individually, based on the procedure and each patient’s health.

Facial Plastic Surgery Questions

Facial plastic surgery focuses on procedures of the face, head, and neck — both cosmetic procedures like facelift and rhinoplasty and reconstructive treatments for functional concerns.
Recovery varies by procedure and by patient. Some non-surgical treatments involve little or no downtime. After surgery, the time needed to return to work or routine activities may range from several days to several weeks, while swelling, incision healing, and final results can continue to improve for weeks or months. During your consultation, Dr. Mao will explain the expected recovery timeline, activity restrictions, and follow-up care for the procedure being considered.
